Caledon and area dealing with after-effects of ice storm

The Town of Caledon urges residents to beware of downed wires and fallen trees.

“We urge you to take precaution and avoid touching wires or passing through streets with fallen trees, if possible,” said a Facebook post.

To report downed wires, call Hydro One at 1-800-434-1235. Any fallen trees or storm debris can be sent in online at caledon.ca/reportaproblem.

The town is also offering residents without power a spot to keep warm.

“Caledon Fire is responding to a high volume of power-related emergencies and actively monitoring the ongoing power outage. In collaboration with various departments, we have identified a centralized location where residents can seek warmth and charge their devices,” said deputy fire chief Jeff Fairbarn.

He added crews have also been working with members of Peel Region Emergency Management to help the vulnerable populations at Peel Retirement Facilities in Caledon by checking on their well-being.

“The Town’s Public Works, Roads Operations, and Parks and Forestry teams have been working continuously to address the impacts of the storm. The employees are assisting Hydro One with tree removals and debris clean up as well as working with OPP on road closures. Work will continue into the week to ensure the safe passage for all our residents.”

Fairbarn is asking residents to check @TownofCaledon on social media for updates as they become available.

On the weekend, power lines were downed across the province.

Utility crews worked almost non-stop Sunday to restore power to customers across the province.

Hydro One reports that crews have restored power to more than 358,000 customers since the start of the storm that caused more than 4,000 outages.
