Headwaters Health Care Centre is now providing prostate surgery after receiving a $67,000 donation for the purchase of specialized equipment.
Lions Clubs International Foundation, Orangeville Lions Club, Grand Valley Lions Club, Shelburne Lions Club and the Lions Clubs of District A-9 joined forces on the gift. The hospital was able to purchase a Bookwalter Retractor Set and Prostatectomy Instrumentation.
The equipment is needed to perform what’s called a radical prostatectomy, an operation that treats prostate cancer.
The foundation said that over the past five years, 237 patients in the hospital’s catchment area went elsewhere for the procedure.
“This grant will make a huge difference to the level of care provided at Headwaters Health Care Centre, expanding our services to include care for patients who need prostate surgery,” the foundation’s CEO, K.C. Carruthers, said in a news release.
Dr. Shreyas Gandhi, the hospital’s chief of urology, said in the release the equipment purchase will “improve care for patients by expediting cancer care and reducing systemic pressures through a reduced need to transfer patients to distant hospitals with long surgical wait times.”
