Flood risk for Caledon and surrounding area

Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) has issued a flood outlook statement. It is warning the public, especially children and pets, to stay away from rivers, creeks and streams.

The conservation authority said this week’s warmer weather combined with the significant snowpack will cause snow melt and could result in runoff in the range of 10 to 25 millimetres. The melt started earlier this week and is expected to continue through Thursday.

“While neither significant river ice breakup nor flooding of the Credit River is expected, some areas will see increased water levels and localized minor flooding and/or river ice breakup may occur,” said a CVC press release.

“Higher water levels will result in local streams and rivers becoming dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts, bridges and dams. The public is advised to stay away from all watercourses.”

A flood outlook statement is issued as an early notice of the potential for flooding. It is one of 36 conservation authorities in Ontario and is dedicated to protecting, restoring and managing the natural resources of the Credit River Watershed.

Jeff Wong, CVC’s senior engineer of water operations, said the organization continuously monitors weather and ice conditions and water levels for potential flooding in the Credit River Watershed through its flood forecasting and warning program.

“As conditions evolve over the next few days, we will continue to communicate with local municipal management officials on the status of potential flood conditions in the watershed,” he said in an email Tuesday.
