The Town of Caledon has declared an outbreak of Avian Influenza (bird flu) at the stormwater ponds in Bolton and Southfields Village.
The announcement was made today by Caledon’s Municipal Law Enforcement division.
Reports from the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (CWHC) indicate that the virus was found in dead geese found near the ponds. No instances of transmission to humans have been found.
“The town is currently working with the CWHC to monitor the areas and coordinate cleanup, but residents are advised to take precautions and avoid the ponds at this time,” explained a new release.
The risk of Avian Flu spreading to humans is extremely rare and there are currently no indicators of increasing risk to the public.
“It is strongly recommended by the Public Health Agency of Canada that residents should not handle sick or dead wild birds or other wildlife, as they may be infected with diseases that can spread to humans. Pets should also be kept away from sick or dead wildlife and be kept on a leash,” added the release.
Caledon Animal Services discourages the use of birdfeeders and recommends the removal of existing ones to limit transmission to help stop the spread of the virus. They also say cats should also be kept indoors and birdbaths on private property should be avoided.
Residents are asked to report any sick or dead wildlife on public property to the Town by calling 3-1-1. Caledon does not provide service to private properties.
