A federal election could be called as early as the spring and the Dufferin-Caledon Federal Liberal riding association has selected its candidate.
Malalai Halimi, who immigrated to Canada from Afghanistan in 2006, has secured the nomination.
“Malalai’s nomination marks a significant step in the association’s efforts to strengthen the voice of our community in Ottawa,” said the Dufferin-Caledon Federal Liberal Association in a news release.
Halimi works as a business manager in the aerospace industry and she is the founder of an Afghan-Canadian media network.
“My journey to Canada was not easy, it shaped who I am today,” Halimi explained. “I am committed to ensuring that Dufferin-Caledon’s voice is heard and that we have access to the support and opportunities we deserve.”
Halimi touted Liberal government programs such as the Canada Child Benefit for helping rebuild her life in Canada.
“I know the challenges that Dufferin-Caledon families face because I’ve lived it. And now, I have the opportunity to fight for them in Ottawa,” she added.
Halimi is focused on supporting the party’s commitments to $10-a-day child care, building nearly four million affordable homes across Canada, as well as delivering a comprehensive dental and universal pharmacare plan for Canadians, according to the release.
“I am honoured to be your Liberal candidate and excited to work alongside our community to build a stronger, more inclusive future for everyone.”
