Heavy snowfall is expected in various parts of Ontario today, with some areas north of the GTA expecting to see up to 60 centimetres of snow. The Caledon region isn’t likely to be hit as hard with anywhere from five to 10 centimetres in the forecast.
“The lake effect snow is expected to gradually weaken this afternoon,” said Environment and Climate Change Canada in a press release.
Motorists should expect hazardous winter driving conditions and adjust travel plans accordingly today, the weather watcher said. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.
For areas in the snow belt, including Barrie, Orillia, Collingwood, Washago and Port Carling, lake-effect snow squalls are expected, continuing into Friday morning.
“Lake effect snow squalls from Georgian Bay are tracking well inland and will persist today and tonight,” said Environment Canada. “Lake effect snow is expected today and tonight before moving south of the area Friday morning.”
Northwest winds gusting up to 60 kilometres an hour can result in blowing snow and significantly reduced visibility at times. Lake effect snow will return this weekend over some areas.
Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Road closures are possible.
In places such as Peterborough, Lakefield, Fenelon Falls, up to 25 cm is expected today.
