A new elementary school with a capacity of 850 students will be built in Caledon’s fast-growing Mayfield West Phase 2 area.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce and Dufferin-Caledon MPP Sylvia Jones announced the $32.5-million project at Caledon’s Alloa Public School.
“There’s no doubt that this is a growing ward in Caledon, and infrastructure needs to be in place for these new families who should not have to wait years and years to get a school of their own,” said Jones.
Construction of the new school will begin next year and is expected to be completed by September 2027 although no site has been selected.
“We are committing to having a shovel in the ground in the next year,” said the local school trustee, Stan Cameron, adding he hopes Peel Region, the Town of Caledon and the school board’s planning department will work together to “speed up” the construction process. “Children are waiting. Families are waiting.”
The school will have room for up to 850 students from kindergarten to Grade 8. The school will also feature 73 licensed child-care spaces.
Councillor Dave Sheen said Ward 2 will be the fastest growing area in Caledon as the town delivers on its housing pledge.
“New homeowners want their young children to attend school in their neighbourhood and not have to be bussed elsewhere, and this announcement means that will be possible for our future Caledon residents.”
