The Town of Caledon has proclaimed May 26 to June 1 as National AccessAbilty Week.
“National AccessAbility Week is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Canadians with disabilities, as well as promote accessibility and inclusion in all aspects of life,” explained Mayor Annette Groves, Town of Caledon. “The town is committed to inclusivity and establishing an environment that is open and accessible for residents of all abilities.”
This endorsement reflects Caledon’s support of the Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC) and commitment to achieving a barrier-free Caledon. This year’s theme for National AccessAbility Week is “Forward Together – Accessibility and Inclusion for All,” emphasizing the need for collective efforts towards barrier-free communities and that strength lies in the diversity of people.
A release states there are more invisible disabilities than people think. For example, 96 per cent of people with chronic medical conditions live with an illness, 20 per cent of Canadians will experience mental illness and 10 per cent of Canadians have a learning disability.
The town will share social media posts throughout the week to help build awareness.
