Caledon Council has broken its commitment to confidentiality on Peel transition.
The Transition Board is looking to keep regional roads and waste management at the Region to protect Caledon taxpayers. In a release the town said it is concerned there may be an option on the table where residents would be asked to foot the bill which means a minimum 70 per cent tax hike.
“Throughout the transition, Caledon has been promised that we would be ‘kept whole’ financially and that our taxpayers would not be burdened by this process. A report will be submitted to the province within weeks, and we still have not seen the funding formula that protects Caledon taxpayers now and, in the future,” said Councillor Doug Maskell, Chair of the Caledon’s Single Tier Transition Committee.
Caledon has steadfastly maintained its commitment to the confidential process laid out by the Transition Board when it was first formed.
“No one can afford a 70-plus percent tax increase,” added Mayor Annette Groves. “Without a firm and significant financial commitment, we see no other option than to have regional roads and waste management for Caledon remain at the Region of Peel and funded through the current model.”
